Joining the Dots – Henry Wilson’s win at Bombay Sapphire
We’re a little late to the party – but that’s quite fashionable right?!
The Bombay Sapphire Design Discovery Award (BSDDA) presentation evening took place just over a month ago, with Sydney based designer Henry Wilson taking out the top award for his ‘A-Joint’ multi-use joinery system.
There was a lot of interesting and beautiful work that made it through to the final round of the BSDDA this year, but I couldn’t agree more that Henry’s ‘A-Joint’ was really deserving of the top win.
Most interesting is the story behind the ‘A-Joint’, which was developed as part of Interpretations III, a project and exhibition run every second year by Vert Design.
Each edition of Interpretations sees a group of designers come together to explore a particular manufacturing process outside of their everyday practice.
The process often yields design outcomes which are totally new to each designer’s line of work.
This year saw said designers – Henry included – visit a foundary in Sydney, to learn about sand casting and cast their own moulds – the ‘A-Joint’ came out of this.
Henry’s piece represented a really practical outcome; it had a potential about it, that would extend beyond the Interpretations project and exhibition – and it has already proven its metal through this recent win.
It will be interesting to see where Henry will take it, and perhaps what else will come out of this new-found knowledge for sand casting, coupled with the support of the BSDDA.
You can actually meet Henry at his studio-retail space, Trent & Henry, which he runs with Trent Jansen, in The Rocks in Sydney.
Otherwise check out his website here.
