A chat with the Boss!
During Saturday in Design I was lucky enough to get a bit of time with Andy Watson of Boss Design.
Boss are based in the Clerkenwell design district in London, and are manufacturers and designers of high-end corporate seating – and I must admit their seating is pretty nice!
Boss seating is now available in Australia through Chairbiz, who manufactures – and even upholsters – your Boss seat to fit your requirement.
Andy filled me in a little on the Boss business – a family owned business, with some 220 employees.
“Our philosophy is about investing in design and development,” says Andy. “We have a strong design team, and tap into four or five outside designers” – for their latest creations.
In the last five years, Boss have launched around 20 new products, including the ‘Kruze’ seating range by David Fox – and at the Milan Furniture Fair this year the ‘Kruze’ lounge.
It hasn’t been an easy market to succeed in – with the global recession and its continuing aftershocks – but Boss took a leap of faith, investing in the development of their London showroom – a decision which has paid off, says Andy.
“That’s why we’re in the position we’re in today. We’re doing well in a ‘mixed’ UK market,” he says.
“In conjunction with all of this, we’ve made a concerted effort to export our products.”
Their presence at the Milan Furniture Fair earlier this year also showed positive results with new opportunities arising in Japan, India, Turkey as well as Australia.
Much of their products are an investment in time, design and development – and ‘Mars’ is an outstanding example of this.
“Everything on that chair, we’ve invested in,” says Andy.
The unique four-star base you’ll see on many of their chairs is also a reflection of their considered approach, specially designed by Boss and only available with Boss seating.
Anyway, enough talk from me, scroll on to check out some of the Boss products which are now available to us in Australia, through Chairbiz.
